PRODUCTS: TILLAGE EQUIPMENT: RIGID SHANKS VS
SPRING SHANKS
This is a comparison of rigid shanks and
spring shanks. The Till-Ease Model 543
comes standard with 5 rigid shanks. The
pictures below were taken to show the
clear advantage of rigid shanks. To
conduct this test, the Model 543 was run
with 3 rigid shanks and 9" field
cultivator sweeps. The Model 543 was
then equipped with three spring style
shanks with 7" wide field cultivator
sweeps.
The rigid shanks have no trouble sinking
into the ground. Without a way to
control the depth, the Model 543 would
easily sink deeper than an ATV could
pull.
There is a clear difference. The section
to the right was done with rigid shanks
and the left was done with spring
shanks. Spring shanks tend to spring
back and the sweep angle is severely
changed. This causes the sweep to drag
instead of shear and heave the ground.
Surprisingly, the spring shanks with 7"
sweeps pull about as hard as the rigid
shanks with 9" sweeps. So not only are
the sweeps wider on the rigid shanks but
the rigid shanks are tilling roughly
twice as deep.
